There was a short delay to the beginning of the sugar beet harvest this week because of warmer condition and now rain may again put things on hold. Rain has moved into the area, and farmers are now waiting to see how much they will get Friday.
Expect traffic on local roads and highways to be dramatically busier as the beet harvest kicks into full gear. An accident involving a beet truck and car near Glyndon today is another reminder to all of us that adjustments need to be made during the annual harvest.
The federal government says it will allow farmers to plant genetically modified sugar beets while it finishes work on a full environmental impact statement on the beets' effect on other crops and the environment.
