GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The president of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education and the state House majority leader are squabbling over the impending retirement of the University of North Dakota nickname.
But won’t block Sioux legislation
House Majority Leader Al Carlson said he won’t be the one to make the first move to reverse a state law mandating the University of North Dakota keep its Fighting Sioux nickname.
Both Governor Dalrymple and Representative Carlson expressed some disappointment with their NCAA meeting. But, both agreed that the nickname and logo need to go because the consequences are just too serious for the University.
The incoming President of the State Board of Higher Education says the board is trying to set up a meeting between all parties involved with the Fighting Sioux nickname issue. A date just needs to be settled upon.
