BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the state is designating more than $750,000 in federal grant money to help Valley City and Cooperstown beef up infrastructure to guard against Sheyenne River flooding.
The Red River at Grand Forks and East Grand Forks crested at 49.87 ft. earlier this week. That's the third-highest crest in Grand Forks history. But the city remained safe, thanks to permanent protection put in after the flood of 1997.
U.S Representative Collin Peterson says he is only in favor of the Fargo Moorhead diversion if it doesnt raise water levels downstream. Today he talked about a separate plan he says could be funded through the farm bill.
The Red River Basin Commission has questioned in the past whether a 500-year protection in Fargo and 700-year protection in Manitoba could drastically lower the effectiveness of flood protection in Grand Forks.
County residents will be getting a new flood insurance rate map. It is the first major change since 1977.
