REDMOND, Wash. (AP) - Microsoft says it is buying Nokia's devices and services business, and getting access to the company's patents, for a total of 5.44 billion euros ($7.2 billion) in an effort to expand its share of the smartphone market.
Even as a pared-down version of Microsoft's Office software package arrived on the iPhone, the company is holding out on extending that to the iPad and Android devices as it tries to boost sales of tablet computers running its own Windows system.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Microsoft has unveiled Surface, a tablet computer to compete with Apple's iPad.
CEO Steve Ballmer announced the new tablet, calling it part of a "whole new family of devices" the company is developing.
Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday that it has agreed to buy the popular Internet telephone service Skype SA for $8.5 billion in the biggest deal in the software maker's 36-year history.
