Local family gives an update on couple injured in moose and car collision
Near Manvel, ND (WDAZ-TV)--An accident shreds a couple's car.
Family members are saying it's a miracle they're still breathing.
At the corner of Highway 81 and 20th Street Northeast where police say a car hit a moose last night. The accident was so bad it sent two people to the hospital.
This is their family's first time seeing the wrecked car.
"Really emotional. And sad. I just can't believe they got out of it alive," says Joann Sanchez, Mother.
Joann Sanchez says her daughter, Blossom, is in a lot of pain after the car she was riding in hit the moose in the dark, around 10:30 last night.
She had to have surgery on her jaw -- and have it wired shut after the crash.
"We believe in God. All the time. So we were praying that everything was ok," says Joann.
Her husband Juan had to have stitches -- after the moose went over their car and broke their front and rear windows.
The animal died on impact.
WDAZ News checked with the Grand Forks County Sheriff about the frequency of these crashes. We've learned they see as many as two every year.
And there's not much anyone can do to stop them.
"It's just something that happens," says Lt. Gary Grove, Grand Forks County Sheriff's Department.
Family members set up a GoFundMe account hoping to help the couple with their medical bills.
As the couple recovers tonight -- their family says they're grateful to be alive.
