EAST GRAND FORKS, MN (WDAZ)--The East Grand Forks Police Department is inching it's way closer to its goal of 35-thousand dollars for a K-9 unit.

So far, the department has raised 15 thousand dollars, and has been promised another 15 grand from various donors.

If city council votes to approve the addition of a K-9 unit on Tuesday night, the department would need just a few thousand dollars more to cover their start-up costs. It's an addition the department says would greatly help.

“The biggest factor is the dog would be trained as a drug detection dog. The opioid crisis we've had in this region--our problems just aren't going away--and this would be just one more tool we could have to use toward trying to fight that problem,” said East Grand Forks Police Chief, Michael Hedlund.

If you want to donate to the cause, drop by the East Grand Forks Police Department--all donations are tax deductible.
