Man charged in his cousin's murder case pleads guilty in Otter Tail County

A man charged in his cousin's murder case has pleaded guilty in Otter Tail County.

24-year-old Michael Kyle Burris appeared for a plea hearing Thursday. Pleading guilty to aiding an offender-accomplice after the fact of murder.

Usually that felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years- but as part of a plea deal, both sides agreed to a maximum recommendation just over six years.

In court, Michael Kyle Burris admitted to helping his father- 65-year-old Michael Allen Burris who is charged with felony second degree murder, dispose of his cousin's body.

The cousin- Scott Burris- was found dead in the Otter Tail River two years ago.

Prosecutors say his murder stemmed from a drug debt of $20,000.

Michael Kyle Burris's sentencing is set for October 3rd, the same month his father should go to trial.
