City crews monitor GF Landfill after fire breaks out
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--City crews are keeping a close eye on the Grand Forks landfill after it caught fire early Monday morning.
It broke out around 7 on Monday morning.
Workers at the landfill were able to control the fire without the help of the fire department - using clay and other clean soil materials.
The cause is still unknown but managers at the landfill say chemical reactions or hot ashes probably started the blaze.
“Landfill fires can be because of chemical reactions, those kinds of things, and so rather than adding water to the fire, generally the soil materials work very well in that area,” said Grand Forks Public Works employee Leahrae Amundson.
City crews had the fire entirely contained in less than 2 hours.
