Minnesota voter turnout for primary higher than 2012

Moorhead, M.N. - The Minnesota Secretary of State's office released voter turnout numbers from the August 12th state primary election.

Statewide, more people turned out to vote than the primary in 2012.

10.37 percent of all registered voters filled out a ballot, representing a rise over the 9.61 percent of voters who turned out in 2012.

In physical votes, those percentages represent 401,878 voters compared to 359,682 in 2012.

The number of people who cast absentee ballots and those who registered on the day of the primary were also up compared to 2012.

Around 27,500 absentee ballots were cast last Tuesday compared to the 19,624 in 2012.

Additionally, 19,358 people registered for voting at polling locations last week as opposed to 17,975 who signed up in 2012.

However, when compared to the two primary elections previous to 2012, the 2014 numbers do look as impressive.

In 2010, 606,394 people (15.93 percent) participated in the primary while 419,474 (11.26 percent) voted in 2008.

I joined the WDAY 6 news team in September of 2013 as a weekend anchor and reporter. I am currently the Assitant News Director and 5p.m. anchor. Previous to arriving in the F-M area, I worked as a broadcast journalist at the CBS affiliate (KTVQ) in Billings, Montana (sidenote: my hometown). I have worn many hats in my young broadcast career as an anchor, reporter, producer, sports producer and online producer. However, my favorite role to play is storyteller. Off the clock (are we ever really off the clock?) I enjoy taking in a sporting event on TV or in person. On the professional level, I root for Seattle teams. As a graduate of the University of Montana, I also enjoys FCS football (but forgive my allegiance). I also enjoy reading, watching movies, listening to good music and frolicking in the outdoors. I enjoy those things all the more when I can do them with my wife and our daughter. If you have a story idea for me, or just want to say hello, you can send me an email!
