6-year-old on bike killed in highway crash in Rolla

Rolla, ND - A 6-year-old girl has been killed here by a driver who hit her as she was crossing the highway on her bicycle.

North Dakota Highway Patrol Sgt. Greg Smith said the child was riding north across U.S. Highway 281 within the city limits of Rolla at around 6:25 p.m. Tuesday when she was hit by a 2009 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck.

The driver, Ronald MacKinnon, 72, of Rolla, was headed westbound on 281 and didn’t see the girl as he checked his rearview mirror.

After Mackinnon’s front end hit the child, he pulled over to the side of the road, said Smith.

Rolla Police, the Rollette County Sheriff’s Department, and Rolla Fire and Rescue responded to the crash.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not yet been released.

In light of recent bicycling deaths, the City of Grand Forks has provided rules and safety tips on their website.
