DeKok won't let cancer stop him from coaching the sport he loves
FARGO -Many teams have to overcome adversity on the road to the state tournament, but for one team their head coach personifies that.
Over a year ago, Bismarck St. Mary’s head coach Brent DeKok suffered a seizure when he has at home and later discovered he had a tumor in his brain, lung, and knee and was diagnosed with sarcoma.
Dekok has continued to embrace the fight against cancer by coaching basketball. A week after brain surgery in 2017, DeKok was back on the bench coaching his team.
For the time being, DeKok is done with chemotherapy and radiation treatment and is awaiting to see if he has beaten the disease.
The Saints coach fight with cancer may be coming to an end. DeKok has one final surgery in Rochester next week to if he is cancer free.
