NEW ORLEANS—New Orleans Saints executive vice president/general manager Mickey Loomis announced Sunday that the team signed former North Dakota State cornerback Marcus Williams. Williams was originally drafted by the Houston Texans following the 2014 NFL Draft. The 5-foot-11, 196-pound Minneapolis native has appeared in 49 career games with 14 starts with the New York Jets (2014-17) and Texans (2017).
WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Iowa starting pitcher Brody Watson pitched five-plus solid innings to help lead his team to a 7-4 victory against the Fargo Little League team Saturday to win the Midwest Regional Championship. Iowa advanced to the Little League World Series, which starts Aug. 16 in Williamsport, Pa. “It’s a tough one. It stings a little bit,” Fargo manager Mike Rerick said. “We ran into a hot pitcher. That guy was lights out from the first inning on. He was tough to hit.”
WAHPETON, N.D. – Authorities have identified an 84-year-old woman who was killed and two people who were injured in a home explosion Saturday, Aug. 4, west of Wahpeton. Mavis Onchuck, of Wahpeton, was killed in the blast, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office. Cole Defries, 22, and Danielle Faller, 25, both of Wahpeton, were injured and were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
FARGO—The RedHawks tallied four runs in the third inning en route to a 7-4 win over Cleburne on Sunday in American Association baseball at Newman Outdoor Field in front of 3,033 fans. Michael Tamburino gave up two earned runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win in his RedHawks debut. The right-hander was acquired by Fargo-Moorhead in a trade with Lincoln on Saturday.
MINOT, N.D.—Drake Flesche drove in four runs to help lift West Fargo to an 11-1 five-inning victory over Mandan on Sunday in the North Dakota Class 2A American Legion state baseball tournament. "He's always someone in the middle of the lineup we can count on," West Fargo head coach Jordan Rheault said about Flesche's performance. "He had a big double to right center at a needed time."
FARGO – Fargo police arrested two men early Thursday, July 19, after a victim reported he was being attacked by people with baseball bats, according to Fargo police.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Leo Pina had two hits, including a home run, and also drove in three runs to help lift the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to a 12-5 victory against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Saturday in American Association baseball at Sioux Falls Stadium. The RedHawks (29-23) have won three consecutive games. Pina went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. He belted a two-run double that helped spark a five-run first inning for F-M, which built a 12-0 lead through six innings.
EPPING, N.D. – A man who was trying to get a motorcycle off railroad tracks near here was struck and killed by a train Saturday night, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. The name of the victim, a 66-year-old from Epping, has not yet been released. The crash happened about 11:30 p.m. on Williams County Road 8, 1.5 miles east of Epping.
FARGO—Leo Pina had four hits and drove in five runs to lead the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to a 9-4 victory against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Thursday in American Association baseball at Newman Outdoor Field. Pina finished 4-for-5 and also scored a run. Maikol Gonzalez, Devan Ahart and Charlie Valerio each added two hits for F-M, which improved to 22-22 overall. Pina had a three-run triple in the sixth inning to give F-M a 9-4 lead.
GRAND FORKS – The body of a 23-year-old Grand Forks man was recovered in a pond in rural Grand Forks County on Sunday morning, July 1, after kayakers found the man’s belongings in the water, according to the sheriff’s office. The name of the man has not been released pending notification of his family. The death remains under investigation.
