GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) -- It's your chance to look at the city's budget line by line, as they move towards finalizing the dollars and cents. The city of Grand Forks has posted a draft of the budget on their website. There are informational graphs available to give you a better perspective about where your money is going. The budget includes road and street maintenance projects. City leaders are hoping to get as much feedback as possible as this is the most flexible time of year for the budget.
Grand Forks, ND (WDAZ-TV) -- Less than a week after crews installed bump outs in Downtown Grand Forks -- the city council is discussing taking them out. A new look downtown -- "At first I was shocked. I was wondering what this red monstrosity was," says Zachary Bredeson, lives downtown. -- is causing confusion for pedestrians.
GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) -- More than a dozen people are looking for a place to stay tonight after a fire rips through their apartment complex. A late night fire had families running for their lives. "I just got woke up at about 12:40 to my neighbors banging at my door and yelling get out,” said Ashley Tozer, a resident. "I grabbed my son and my sister and we ran out. And the whole back half of the garages is on fire." Fire officials say the blaze started in a garage. And within minutes spread to the apartment building.
GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) -- A unique plane and pilot come to town captivating University of North Dakota students with a feat of engineering. "I think it's ridiculous in the best way possible," said Amanda Voelker, an aviation student. ”Just the idea of putting the two together and then on top of it you're throwing a jet engine in there." It's a rare find created by a UND grad and commercial pilot.
EAST GRAND FORKS, MN (WDAZ-TV) – Firefighters in East Grand Forks are worried about one of their biggest fundraisers of the year. About 60 teams are currently signed up for the Cats Incredible Cat Fishing Tournament but they're hoping that number will at least cross 100. Last year, anglers came from as far as Canadian provinces and Nebraska in order to catch 15-pound fish. It's all in an effort to raise about $10,000 for the East Grand Forks Fire Department.
Grand Forks, ND (WDAZ-TV) -- It's a rare accident -- that requires coordinated response. When hazardous materials spill -- seconds could mean lives. A derailment or spill -- "I don't think I want it around here," says Shirley Rothenberger, lives nearby. -- people in Grand Forks say they hope never happens.
DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) -- It all started with 911 calls. Police say people living nearby reported a man breaking into homes. And it ended with one man dead here by these railroad tracks. Gun shots ring out through a Devils Lake Trailer Court. "Our kids could've been in the line of fire possibly," neighbor Michael Green said. And neighbors are worried for their families. "The thought of it happening is just kind of scary,” Green said. “You know. Especially with how many kids are running around in the neighborhood and they play.”
GRAND FORKS – (WDAZ-TV) – It's on North 4th Street where the fire department says a truck hit the skyway. It's an unusual accident in this part of town. "Transporting what appeared to be like a shed and the clearance wasn't high enough," said Battalion Chief Mike Sandry, of the Grand Forks Fire Department. An alleged hit and run. "The reports are that the person who hit it maybe knew that he hit it and was in a hurry to leave," Sandry said. Police say they're looking for the driver. Witnesses called the accident in after he allegedly took off.
GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) -- Do you feel safe in your community? Grand Forks Police want to know. It's all part of a five question survey the police department says is designed for them to check in with the public. Police tell us they want to make sure there are no neighborhood issues they are missing. They made the survey available online this morning and have already received nearly half the total number of responses they got last year.
GRAND FORKS – (WDAZ-TV) -- As families celebrate the holiday roads could be dangerous for drivers. "Fireworks, the food, picnics, getting together having fun," said Phyllis Wilkes, a Grand Forks resident. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, 48 cars were stopped at a DUI checkpoint in Grand Forks this weekend. Three people were arrested for DUI and another one was given a ticket for an open container in their car. "We never drink and drive. Always try to be careful when we're driving. Just be cautious," Wilkes said.
