It's 911 dispatchers appreciation week and our local operators at the public safety answering point are cluing us in on their jobs. They're often the first people in contact with someone during a traumatic event.

GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ-TV) -- A vision of change. This afternoon, the North Dakota Vision Services made their way up and down the streets for their Annual Walk for Vision. All proceeds from the event went to the North Dakota Association of the Blind, an organization that provides opportunities and programs for people who are visually impaired. Walkers hope the mile stroll draws awareness to what the community can do.
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--After a year of collecting donations from the community, St. Anne’s Guest House is all set up for their annual Rummage Sale. The sale starts on Friday at 8 AM, and goes until 2 PM. You can check out all the clothing, furniture, and knick-knacks donated by other Grand Forks residents. This year, one generous donor even dropped off a few boxes of brand new men's shoes.
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--On Thursday, local businesses made their way over to Minnkota Power Co-Op for some free training in emergency planning. The North Dakota Safety Council taught area businesses how to develop an emergency action plan to keep their community safe in case of natural disasters, active shooters, or fires. Event organizers say while it's important to have a plan in place, it's also crucial to practice it.
Cavalier, ND (WDAZ-TV) A Pembina County Sheriff's deputy is under investigation for assault. The ex-fiance of Deputy Brad Bowman claims he attacked her Monday during an argument. The Cavalier Police Department responded to the call. Deputy Bowman was not arrested at the time.
(WDAZ-TV) -- Two men ran a stop sign in Grand Forks County this morning -- and ended up behind bars. Forty-three-year-old, Raymond Peltier and thirty-seven-year-old, Bennett Blackbird were arrested for outstanding warrants. A deputy started the chase just south of Grand Forks at 2:30 after seeing the car run the sign. It continued into Traill County and into Hillsboro before deputies set up the spike strip - stopping the car on I-29 - about forty miles away.
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--The STD rate in Grand Forks is rising, and a local health organization is hoping to end the trend...with pizza. On Wednesday, Valley Health held their “Pee for pizza” event. People were able to stop by and receive free STD testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and Hepatitis C, and before being treated to free Deek’s Pizza.
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ-TV) -- The povery rate went up today in Grand Forks. Today the United Way put on a poverty simulation at the Alerus Center to give locals a look into what it's like to live in poverty. Local residents, business leaders, and elected officials were given little cards with an 'identity' they had to stick with during the simulation. The identity gave participants a back-story, including a family, and a salary. The players then had to walk through the challenge and figure out how to balance paying bills and feeding their families.
GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--Miss America was in Grand Forks on Tuesday, April 10. Miss America made her way to Grand Forks for UND's Women for Philanthropy Luncheon. The luncheon is meant to empower local women in leadership, and give them a chance to network with each other.
